In mid-October, the Libya Holy Quran Institution designated last day of October as the day of honoring Quranic people in the country.

It said ceremonies and programs are organized every year on this day, which is the day when the institution was established.

A number of officials, including the Libyan Minister of Culture and Knowledge, Mabrouka Toghy, the head of the institution, and scholars, experts and people interested in Quranic activities took part in the first such programs on Monday.

The programs included honoring Quran activists and those serving the Holy Book, delivering speeches, introducing Quranic orthography methods, and introducing the activities of the Libya Holy Quran Institution.

Earlier in October, the institution had organized an international conference on Quranic orthography in the Libyan capital of Tripoli.

The Libya Holy Quran Institution has been established by the Government of National Unity (GNU). It is tasked with regulating and overseeing the activities of Quran calligraphers and publishers, among other things.

Libya is a Muslim-majority country in North Africa where Quranic activities are very popular. It is said to have more than a million Quran memorizers.

The country has been in turmoil since a NATO-backed civil war in 2011 overthrew and killed veteran dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

Libya has in recent years been split between the GNU in Tripoli, and an eastern-based administration.
